20 πλησμονή
πλησμονή, ῆς, ἡ (πίμπλημι; Eur., Pla., X. et al.; GVI I, 1946, 3=New Docs 4 no. 6, 3; Plut., LXX; PsSol 5:17; Philo; Jos., Ant. 11, 34; Just., D. 126, 6) process of securing complete satisfaction, satiety esp. w. food and drink, but also w. other types of enjoyment, satisfaction, gratification (Pla., Leg. 837 c; cp. Ps.-Clem., Hom. 8, 15 πρὸς τὴν ἑαυτῶν πλησμονήν). In our lit. the word is found only Col 2:23 in a difficult saying (Theodore of Mops. I 296 Swete) πρὸς πλησμονὴν τ. σαρκός. The Gk. exegetes understood this to mean for the gratification of physical needs. But σάρξ, acc. to vs. 18, is surely to be taken in a pejorative sense, and πρός has the force ‘against’. The transl. is prob. best made along the lines of NRSV: of no value in checking self-indulgence.—BHall, ET 36, 1925, 285; PHedley, ZNW 27, 1928, 211–16; GBornkamm, TLZ 73, ’48, 18.—DELG s.v. πίμπλημι.
